1st Sunday of Advent

November 29, 2015

Coffee and Donuts - All are invited to the Social Hall today after the 10:00am Mass for coffee and donuts.  Access through door via the side alley.

Mens Holy Name Society - The December meeting of the Holy Name Society will be on Saturday, December 12 after the 9am Mass. 2016 officers will be elected at the meeting.

Candlelight Rorate Mass - On the first Saturday of Advent, December 5th, we will have a special 6:00am Sung Mass. This Rorate Mass is lit only by candlelight. Because it is a votive Mass in Mary’s honor, white vestments are worn instead of Advent violet. In the dimly lit setting, we will prepare to honor the Light of the world, Who is soon to be born, and offer praise to God for the gift of Our Lady. As the Mass proceeds and sunrise approaches, the church becomes progressively brighter, illumined by the sun as our Faith is illumined by Christ.

FSSP Christmas Cards Available - The priests of Our Lady of Guadalupe seminary will soon be offering the Christmas Novena of Masses.  Remember to enroll your loved ones and friends by using the beautiful set of Christmas cards.  Many free cards are still available in the back of the Church.  Feel free to take a few sets.

Saturday Exposition & Benediction - Beginning next Saturday, we will have a weekly Holy Hour composed of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction beginning at 8:00am.  This will be followed by our 9:00am Mass.

Friday Evening Mass & Adoration - Beginning Friday, January 8th we will have a weekly 5:30pm Friday Mass followed by Simple Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 6:15pm – 7:15pm.  This will replace our current 1st Friday 6:30pm Mass.

Chorister Program - Mater Dei is beginning a Chorister Program for children grades 2-12 (females and males with unchanged voices).  The students will be taught to read and sing Gregorian Chant.  This class will be highlighted by and oriented toward the students chanting for pre-selected Sung Masses offered throughout the academic period. This program will run from January through May with weekly classes from 3:50 – 5:15 Friday afternoons.  For more information, look under “Parish Groups” on our website: Materdeipa.com

Convert Class - If you are a non-Catholic interested in taking instructions in order to join the Catholic Church, please contact us at the church office.

New St. Tarcisius Group - We are starting a group for children ages 5 - 12 which will meet monthly in order to train the children to meditate from an early age.  Each meeting will include a short, priest led meditation, the rosary, and a potluck dinner.  Meetings will be the 1st Saturday of the month from 5-7pm.  We will gather in a different host family’s home each month.  For information concerning our December 5th meeting please contact us at SaintTarcisiusGroup@MaterDeiPA.com

Corporal Works of Mercy - If any needy person approaches you at St. Lawrence requesting money or another type of material aid, please do not give them any. Instead, direct them to the Cathedral one block up the street towards the Capitol building.  The Cathedral is equipped to assist the needy.  We are not!  Although it may seem the charitable thing to do, please realize that by giving aid to these individuals you are encouraging them to return and hence doing a disservice to your fellow parishioners and in particular the families who should be able to bring their young children here without hesitation. Thank you.

Class Opportunity for Children - Mater Dei is offering two spring semester courses for students from 2nd to 12th grade: a Church History class for children grades 7-12 taught by Fr. Flick and a Bible class for children grades 2-6 taught by Fr. Eichman.  These courses will be offered every Friday at 2:45pm through May. For more information and to register look under “Parish Groups” on our website: Materdeipa.com

December 1st Friday Devotions - Mass will be at 6:30pm.  A Holy Hour of Exposition with Benediction and Confessions directly follows Mass.
